The law of octaves states that when elements are arranged in the ascending order of their atomic weights ,they fall into a same pattern in which their properties repeat at regular intervals . Every 8th element starting from a given element resembles in its properties to that of the starting element .

The law states that:

If the elements are arranged in order of their equivalents [relative atomic masses] with a few transpositions, it will be seen that elements belonging to the same groups appear in the same horizontal line. Also the numbers of similar elements differ by seven or multiples of seven. Members stand to each other in the same relation as the extremities of one or more octaves of music. Thus in the nitrogen group, phosphorus is the seventh element after nitrogen and arsenic is the fourteenth elements after phosphorus as is antimony after arsenic. This peculiar relationship I propose to call “The Law of Octaves”.

Newlands recognized that with every seven elements, the 8th seemed to be very similar to the 1st of the previous seven. He was one of the first scientists to develop a “Periodic Table” from the available atomic weights. Newlands claims to be the first to recognize the “Periodic Law”. He also recognized that the “groups” had more than 3 elements (not just “triads”), and he combined both metals and non-metals in the same group. Aside from that, there are noticeable similarities between the arrangement made be Newlands and the modern periodic table.

However, Newlands’ octaves did not match the 8 columns of the representative elements in the modern periodic table because the inert gases had not been discovered at the time.
