One important function of the ozone layer in the atmosphere:

  • Harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun are extremely dangerous for all species on the earth.
  • The ozone layer in the atmosphere shields the earth from these rays by absorbing them.

Formation of the ozone layer:

  • Ozone (O_{3}) is formed when three free atoms of oxygen (O) combine.
  • Oxygen is present in the form of O_{2} molecules in the atmosphere.
  • The sun's ultraviolet rays split these molecules into free atoms which allows them to form the ozone layer.

Compounds responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer:

  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
  • Nitrogenous compounds ( NO_{2} ,  N_{2}O , NO )

Entering of depletion causing compounds into the atmosphere:

  • Refrigerators, solvents, air-conditioners, spray aerosols, etc. release harmful CFCs into the atmosphere.
  • Nitrogenous compounds are released into the atmosphere during combustion.
