Carbonate ore of metal is first converted into oxide as it is easier to extract metal from its oxide than carbonate. It is done by the process of calcination in which the carbonate ore is coverted into oxide ore by heating it in limited supply of oxygen.
Eg- ZnCO3+Heat----->ZnO+ CO2
ZnO+Heat---->Zn + O2

It is easier to obtain metals from their oxides rather than from carbonates or sulphides. So the ore is first converted into an oxide. A carbonate ore is first converted into oxide ore by calcination. A sulphide ore is converted into oxide ore by roasting.
