According to the Cartesian sign convention the optical center (o) is taccording to the cartesian sign convention the optical Centre is taken to the origin principal axis is the axis of the frame of reference the sun convention is as follows

1 . the object is always placed on the left of the lens all distance parallel to the principal Axis are measured from optical centre
2 . the distance measure to the right of a article to be positive one dose measure to the left or taken to be negative
3 the distance for perpendicular to the principal axis and above it are taken to be positive
4 . distance perpendicular to the principal axis and below it are taken to be negative
5.the focal length of a convex lens is positive while that of a concave lens is negative
