Anaemia is the condition in which the number of Red Blood Cells in the body becomes low.

The person having anaemia is said to be anaemic.

Explanation:

There are various reasons for a person to be anaemic, they are as follows:-

  • The most common reason for anaemia is the deficiency of iron in the body. Our body uses iron to make RBCs, and in the lower amounts of iron adequate RBCs are not formed which leads to anaemia.
  • Anaemia due to active bleeding, or excessive blood loss. This generally is prevalent among women due to excessive loss of blood during their menstrual cycle.
  • Anaemia can also be caused due to kidney related problems. Kidney releases a hormone called erythropoietin which stimulates the body to make RBCs. Due to some problems in kidney this hormone is not released and the number of RBCs decreases in the body which causes anaemia.
  • Anaemia can also be caused due to poor nutrition. In addition to iron different vitamins like Vitamin B12 and folic acid are also needed to make RBCs. If these are deficient it may cause anaemia.
  • Anaemia can also be caused by a hereditary disease called Sickle Cell Anaemia.

Anemia

Explanation:

Anemia describes the condition in which the number of red blood cells in the blood is low.

Some of the causes of anemia are:

  1. Active bleeding
  2. Iron deficiency
  3. Poor nutrition
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Pernicious anemia
  6. Alcoholism

Various other diseases can cause anemia because the body is unable to absorb vitamins and nutrients, or the disease could affect production of RBC by the bone marrow, or RBC could be effectively destroyed by the disease like kidney disease, pernicious anemia, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia and anemia related to medications, etc.
