Once the seed is formed, it is not always necessary that it recieves the perfect light water and nutrients for the development of the embryo within. In most cases, it doesnt and thats when the seed becomes DORMANT.It loses most of its moisture ( now left on 10-15% by mass) and goes into a state of inactivity. This state of inactivity is known as the DORMANY PERIOD.Under suitable conditions it germinates leading to formation of plants.

Causes of Seed Dormancy. Hard seed coat – These are impermeable to water, gases so restrict water uptake and oxygen exchange. Immature embryo – Seeds with small and undeveloped embryos do not germinate. Germination inhibitors – Seedscontain some chemical plant growth regulators, which inhibit seed germination.
