LIS is a profession because -

Handling large volume of books, magazines and journals needs professional training and specialised knowledge.

LIS needs seperate studies which are not included in other streams of education.

LIS is not a profession because -

Most of the libraries use untrained librarians at very low pay scales.

Most of them are not properly trained to handle large volume of books and journals in a systematic way.

Most of the librarians are not under a distinct association.

Any professional you choose will have people speaking both in favor of it and against it.

Consider the case of one of the noblest professions, a doctor.

Some people tend to consider them as a good while others think they just try to make money by giving you costly medicines and conducting costly tests.
