Sodium reacts violently with cold water.
Magnesium reacts with hot water.
Iron only reacts with steam.

Na+ H2O --------> NaOH+H2+Heat energy
Mg+H2O-------->MgOH+H2
Fe+H2O-------> Fe3O4+H2.

The conditions under which the following metals will react with water are as follows -

• Sodium can aggressively react with normal cold water without any excessive requirements.

Sodium produces sodium hydroxide hydrogen gas and lot of heat ,while reacting with the cold water.

Chemical reaction :

Na + H2O -----> NaOH + H2 + ∆

• Magnesium metal cannot react with normal cold water,it only reacts with hot water,to produce magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Chemical reaction :

Mg + H2O ---> MgOH + H2

• Iron metal cannot react with both hot water and cold water. It only reacts with steam which is the gaseous form of the water.

In this reaction iron oxide and hydrogen gas are produced.

Chemical reaction :

Fe + H2O ----> Fe3O4 + H2
