Vegetative Propagation :

\longmapsto The production of new plants from vegetative vegetative parts of the plant is called vegetative propagation.

\large \dag Natural methods of Vegetative propagation are :

Vegetative Propagation by roots : Plants like sweet potato have swollen roots without any shape. These roots are called tuberous roots. These roots also contain small buds which give rise to a new plant when they are planted into moist soil.

Vegetative Propagation by stems : Plants like money plant, potato, ginger, potato, mint etc. reproduce from their stem cuttings.

  • Potato is an underground stem which has small buds called “eyes” on its surface

  • Ginger is an underground stem which is called “rhizome It also reproduces in the same way.

  • Underground stems like onion, tulip are called bulbs. They have buds in their body which helps the plants to grow.

Vegetative Propagation by leaves : The leaves of plants like Begonia produce buds on their margins. While touching moist soil, the buds grow into new plants.

\large \dag Artificial methods of Vegetative propagation are :

Stem cutting : This method is carried out in the plants like hibiscus. The cut stem eventually develops into shoots and roots and grows into a new plant.

Grafting : This method involves two plants of same kind. The root portion is called “stock” and is taken from one plant to another plant that contains many buds called “scion”. They both join together [stock & scion] and they form a new plant.

Layering : In this method, the stem of plants are bent down into the ground so that it is covered with soil after removing the bark from the stem. After some time, the roots start growing from covered stem.
