Stigma is the receptacle on which the pollen lands and germinates, produces a pollen tube that grows through the style towards the ovule/egg to effect fertilisation and seed set

Besides being a moist sticky place where the pollens receive the basic micro-environment for germination; the stigma is much more dynamic.

It has complex chemical-signal interactions with pollen that may disallow the germination of all alien/undesirable pollen that accidentally land on the stigma. Thus , for example, germination of mustard pollen shall not occur on wheat stigma !!
