The blood performs several functions in the body.

▪ Digested food substances are absorbed at the site of absorption by blood and transported to the different organs of the blood.

▪ Oxygen is transported by blood from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues to the respiratory surface.

▪ Metabolic waste products are produced in the body and carried to the organs meant for their removal.

▪ Blood helps to control body temperature by evenly distributing the heat produced in one part of the body to different parts.

▪ Blood transport Chemicals like hormones from the site of their secretions to the target organ.

▪ Blood maintains water balance to a constant level by constant exchange of water between the circulating body and the tissue fluid.

▪ Plasma proteins act as a buffer, this preventing any shift in the pH of blood in maintaining its adequate level.
