A hierarchical system is used for classifying organisms to the species level. It is used to classify the large numbers of animals and plants on the basis of their special characteristics like their habitat, mode of nutrition, etc. The hierarchical groupings in between include phylum, class, family, and order.

Hope it helps dear.
