The immediate cause of the revolt of 1857 was the introduction of the Enfield Rifle.

It is believed that the cartridge of the Enfield Rifle had to bitten off before use. But it's cartridge were made up of pork and beef. The Hindus could not eat a sacred animal like cow and the Muslims could not eat pork as they thought it to be impure. So the introduction of Enfield Rifle had upset the feelings of the Hindus and the Muslims which were a major of the Indian population, they were against it.
