Since gaining independence in 1947 from the colonial powers, India has seen several reforms – social and economic. These reforms brought in positive changes to our society and economy, doing away with outdated policies and laws. It resulted in development of the country as a whole.
The early, leading reformers of Indian society were Swami Vivekananda, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Baba Amte, Acharya Vinobha Bhave etc. Their foresight and leadership, brought in several reforms, that aided the growth and development of India.

The socio-religious movements brought about remarkable changes in society and religion. The Reform Movement also brought a cultural awakening. India saw a rapid development in field of literature,science and art. There was a remarkable improvement in the status and education of women. Laws were enforced to curb social evils. The reform movement created a middle class of teachers,doctors,lawyers, scientists and journalists. This enlightened and educated class played a crucial and constructive role in progress of India.
