After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, the Mughal empire gradually weekend. The East India Company became more ambitious. The British had their own army to protect their trade. they wanted to bring Bengal under their control because it was the richest state in the country. They started building forts and their settlements in the 17th century. They had also maintained an army in Bengal. when Siraj-Ud-Daula became the Nawab of bengal, he ordered the British to remove the Army and stop construction activities as they had not paid the taxes. Later when they denied, he marched against the British in 1756. This incident infuriated the British and they attacked bengal in 1757. Siraj-Ud-daula was defeated in the battle of Plassey and the British became very powerful in the Bengal. This was the first step towards the conquest of Bengal. However they were determined to take control over various part of India.
Another battle, The Battle of Buxar took place in 1764 between the combined army of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and the Two Nawabs With the British East India Company. Again the British emerged victorious. Thus, Bengal administration finally came under British rule and the British East India Company obtained the right to collect revenue.
