When the Ac changes its direction and magnitude after every 1/100 second, then it is called the frequency of an alternate current. In India the value of frequency of AC is 50 Hz(Hertz). In AC transmission there is very less loss of energy compared to that of DC. That is AC is very advantageous over DC for long range transmission of electric current energy. Also the cost of transmission is also very low.

kvnmurty: AC is chosen because of loss of heat energy over the lines is less as compared to DC... stepping up and stepping down is easier

Answer:

Alternating current means its polarity (direction of flow of current ) changes alternately from +ve to -ve and -ve to +ve.

Frequency means the number of times the signal (current/voltage) reaches its maximum or minimum in one second.

In India the frequency is 50 Hz.

AC is an advantage for transmission over long distances as the power losses due to heat dissipation in the wires, is less for AC than DC.  AC is safer than DC for very high Voltages.  Also, it is easier to generate very high voltages in AC than in DC. The cost of transmission for AC is also less than DC.  It is easier to generate AC than DC.  Also it is easier to step up voltages in AC than in DC.
