The Montreal Protocol, an international protocol intended to protect the ozone layer by countering the various reasons of ozone depleting compounds.

Explanation:

The Montreal Protocol was signed on 16th September 1987, and came into force on 1st January 1989. 197 parties (196 states and the European Union) have signed the protocol.

The protocol was designed to control several groups of halogenated hydrocarbons responsible for depletion of stratospheric ozone such as Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and nitrous oxide (N2O) . Substances containing chlorine or bromine have been controlled by the Montreal Protocol whereas some ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) are not yet controlled such as nitrous oxide (N2O).

The international agreement shows recovery of the ozone hole in Antarctica and as per the progress it is indicated that ozone layer will return   to 1980 levels between 2050 and 2070.
