State the reason for addition of caustic alkali to bauxite ore during purification of bauxite.

Bauxite dissolves in caustic alkali and thus impurities can be separated.
kiwiandme: does that happen becayse it is a base and base reaction?

Caustic alkali dissolves aluminium oxide forming soluble sodium aluminate while impurities remain insoluble and precipitate as red mud.
