Connectivity

Growing up, there was an Intelsat map over the bed. Global connectivity was and is a huge value of geostationary satellites. This includes Internet, telephone, and other communications, such as military (Europe has Skynet lol). One limitation is latency: since the satellites are at such high altitude, there is about a half-second lag all told. But the reliability is there except for, you know, clouds and the like.

Broadcasting

For video, audio, and other (usually) non-interactive media, the lag is not an issue. Other limitations of satellite apply, but the range is global.

Monitoring

Weather systems like GOES are the most common use, providing regular and real-time renderings of Earth in various wavelengths. We can visualize hurricanes and wildfires in increasingly better resolution, and there are many other applications.
