Atomic radius is inversely proportional to the effective nuclear charge. As we move from left to right in a period the effective nuclear charge increases. This will decrease the radius of an atom. At the same time, in transition elements the number of electrons in the 3d sub-shell will increase. This will repel the already present 4s electrons. This repulsion will increase the atomic radius. In Fe, Co, Ni & Cu both the effects nearly balance each other keeping the atomic radius same.

This is due to effective nuclear charge and number of electrons in 3-d sub shell.

1) Atomic radii is inversely proportional to the effective nuclear charge, and as we move left to right across a period, the nuclear charge increases. This decreases the radii of the atom.

2) But as we move from left to right we add another electron in the 3-d subshell of the atom and this repel the already present electrons in the 4-s subshell. This tends to increase the size of atom.

3) So, in Fe and Ni both these effects nearly balance each other keeping the atomic radius almost same.
