The day 26th January is significant for India not just because it is celebrated as the Republic Day. Lahore Congress convened on 31st December 1929 on the banks of River Ravi of the Indian National Congress (INC) accepted Poorna Swaraj as the goal of the freedom struggle and decided to celebrate January 26 every year as Independence Day.

Since 26th January 1930 every year independence day was celebrated on that day till 1947 by the INC. While British were contemplating when to leave India they left in such hurry that they choose a random date of August 15 as the independence date (the date of Japanese surrender in 1945 2 years ago).

India however decided to retain this date as the day India turned a Constitutional Republic. Constituent Assembly worked day and night and finally signed the Constitution on November 26, 1949 however the Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950.

Ever wondered why President given a speech on January 26 eve and Prime Minister on August 15? It is the evidence of our acknowledgement of January 26 the date we became a Republic with President as the head of state. Republic Day celebrates recognition of the post of the President of India.
