Answer:

The structural and the functional unit of the nervous system is the Neuron.

Explanation:

  • The nervous system's building blocks are called neurons. To various body parts, they both receive and send signals. Both physical and electrical types of signals are used. There are numerous varieties of neurons that aid in information transmission.

  • Information from the sensory receptor cells dispersed throughout the body is delivered to the brain by the sensory neurons. In contrast, the motor neurons are the means by which the brain communicates with the muscles. Interneurons in the body are the carriers of information between various neurons.
  • A neuron performs the following crucial functions

       1. Chemical synapse

In chemical synapses, the action potential influences other neurons via the synapse, a space between two neurons. The action potential is transmitted by the axon to a postsynaptic terminal, where it triggers the release of neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers. The postsynaptic neurons are stimulated by these neurotransmitters, and they produce an independent action potential.

      2. Electrical  Synapse

An electrical synapse is created when two neurons are joined by a gap junction. Ion channels are present in these spaces and aid in the direct transmission of a positive electrical signal. They move a lot more quickly than chemical synapses.
