▪ Absorption of solar energy by chlorophyll.

▪ Conversion of solar energy to chemical energy and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.

▪ Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates.

Although the above - mentioned steps are essential for photosynthesis, these necessarily do not take place in the same sequence in all plants. For example, desert plants take up carbon dioxide during the night when their stomata are open and reduce it during the day in the presence of solar energy.
