There are 3 major steps in the semi-conservative replication of DNA.

  • Initiation: Initiation of DNA r replication occurs at a point in the helix called the origin of replication or 'ori'. The two strands begin to unwind from this point by the action if many enzymes and form the replication fork.
  • Elongation: The primary enzyme of replication DNA polymerase begins the synthesis of new DNA strands from a primer. It continuously adds nucleotides complementary to the template parent strand.
  • Termination: DNA polymerase stops the synthesis of daughter strands when it comes in contact with termination sequences called ter sites. Here, tus proteins bind to the ter sites and form a complex, stopping replication.
