Political parties perform a number of functions in a democratic state. They are as follows

1.They educate the masses, through their meetings and propaganda, about the various problems facing the country at a partieular time, This helps in the formation of public opinion.

2.They fight elections and try to get the maximum number of their candidates elected.

3. The party which gets an absolute majority in the legislature, forms the government and runs the administration of the country.

4.Other parties form the opposition. They criticise the wrong policies of the government and check it from becoming despotic.

5.Political parties give political education to the people.

6.They serve as a link between the government and the people.

7.They serve as a link between the Legislative and Executive organs of Government. Party in power explains before the public its policies and programmes and appeals for their cooperation. Opposition parties highlight the grievances of public and pressurise the government for their redressel. They also point out the shortcomings of the government before the public.

8.Political parties help in the removal of social evils. They introduce social reforms and mould public opinion in their favour. They draw the attention of the people towards political corruption and suggest way for its eradication.

Multi Party System: A political system when a country has more than two political parties who contest election to come to power.

and works for it and its people is called Regional Political Party.
