Two of the main reasons because of which carbon forms a large number of organic compounds are:
1. Tetravalent nature of carbon
2. Greater C–C bond strength

1) The first reason is catenation
So now what is catenation? ,
the answer for the same is that catenation is the tendency and property of the atom to form chains with the same atom or with the other atoms .Therefore ,carbon forms long chain compounds .
2) Multiple bonds
Carbon has the property to form multiple bonds that is single bond ,double bond or triple bond. so therefore it forms three types of compound of the same carbon number atom like , Ethane(Single bond) ,Ethene(Double bond) ,Ethyne( Triple bond)
