Air is a mixture because:
1) Its components vary from place to place
2) Its components continue to vary
3) Its components can be seperated by physical means
Water is a compound because:
1) Its components are bound together chemically
2) Its components always occur in a fixed proportion -- be it tap water, sea water, etc.
3) Its components cannot be seperated by physical mean

A mixture is having more than one disimilar particle which can't fuse with each other. Air is having dust particle and gases like nitrogen, oxygen etc and also water vapour so its a mixture.________
On the other hand comlound is combination of two or more similar particles which dissolves and form a new compound
Water is formed by the combination of hydrogen and oxygen hence it is a compound
