Both the statements are correct, and statement 2 correctly describes statement 1.

Explanation:

  • Disproportionation reaction is defined as those reactions where a same ion or atom of same oxidation state undergoes both oxidation and reduction to form atleast 2 different compounds.
  • Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide produces water and oxygen gas.
  • The oxidation state of oxygen in hydrogen peroxide is - 1.
  • Oxidation state of oxygen in water is - 2.
  • Oxidation state of oxygen in oxygen gas is 0.
  • So same oxygen that was in - 1 state in peroxide changes to - 2 in water and 0 in oxygen gas.
  • So its a perfect example of disproportionation reaction.
