Our
Environment and How to Save it
Our Environment is a very essential part of our life. It is the main source for us to live in and get food from, to eat, play, work, enjoy, walk, breath, hear or drink. The environment is basically the atmosphere, and surrounding geographical area. We know very well that quality of our life depends on our environment.
Let us question ourselves, who spoils the environment ? Long ago, people lived adapting themselves to the environment and could not harm the environment. In these days we are harming and degrading the environment, and thus indirectly harming ourselves. Power of the technology and science has enabled the man to exploit the environment for selfish and indiscriminate use. This is creating problems for everyone.
The points that trouble us are:
1. Deforestation: cutting and burning of trees, plants indiscriminately, without replanting sufficient number of trees to maintain the balance. Reduction in greenery.
2. Growth of population and Rapid urbanization. The development has increased use of non-environment-friendly materials, chemicals. Occupying green areas and reduction of agricultural and forest areas.
3. Loss of biodiversity
Due to the man encroaching upon their areas of living - habitats - many species are endangered and are extinct. Due to pollution and poisoning of water and air, some birds, and animals probably die every year too.
4. Air pollution (greenhouse gases), drinking water pollution, river and ocean pollution by mixing poisonous chemicals, plastics, oils, paints, fuel emissions. Smoke, carbon dioxide, Sulphur oxides, Carbon monoxide, Flourine related gases etc. Non-biodegradable material thrown in to waters.
5. Global warming and Depletion of ozone layer
The temperature is rising steadily all over the globe. The seasons of the year are getting disturbed. Rains, winds are getting irregular. Ice at the ice mountains and North and South poles are melting. Ozone layer at the top of the atmosphere is getting depleted due to green house gases - chlorofluorocarbons (fluorine radicals due to uv light).
6. Depletion of underground water, oil and gas reserves and natural resources like minerals. We are consuming various natural resources from Earth, faster than they get regenerated naturally. The recycling mechanisms in the bio-sphere of Earth are affected.
Effect of our irrational or selfish actions:
Famines, untimely rains, cyclones, polar ice melting, ecological imbalance, increase in erosion of land, less protection from UV radiation, diseases and life amidst pollution and so on. The various actions that we do intentionally or unintentionally are affecting our environment.
what we have to do :
We have to adapt our manufacturing and domestic product usage processes to the environment. We must use reducible, reusable, regenerative and recyclable techniques. The governments of various countries and the United Nations Organization must take up actions at a global level.
There are many measures taken to reduce use of power and hence consumption of fuel. Green building designs are now being used. These building have high efficiency in using lighting, and water. Renewable energy sources like Solar energy and geothermal energies are being used more than before.
Long term planning and monitoring of actions of private corporations is needed. The young must be educated to live in harmony with environment rather than exploit it.
Many environment friendly fuels, vehicles, constructions are coming up slowly. There is also an awareness for environment friendly Holi colors. Many organic materials are coming into the market. Probably environment friendly measures are costlier at the moment. However, in future they may become viable.
Many voluntary organizations around the world are participating in awareness demonstrations, rallies and other activities regularly. The children are more aware of the environment, pollution and related consequences more than before.
Is it really possible and feasible?
It is probably difficult to have a totally environmentally friendly in all the countries in all fields. All countries are not economically, and technologically at par. The solutions are often expensive for all countries to follow. However, where ever possible in what ever field of application, one's aim should be to be environmentally friendly.
