He rubbed his eyes, the pale yellow lights of the classroom blurry. He still remembered the sound of blaring alarms from earlier in the day, the ambulance arriving at his house. It had been an hour before he found her, blood spilling from her head. She lay at the very end of the tall staircase, a slipper on the other end indicating that she had fallen all the way down. He muffled his cries and immediately rushed to the nearest telephone, calling for a hospital to come pick her up. He didn’t want to come to school. He had no choice.
The teacher, as though noticing his panic, walked up to his desk. Asked a question. His voice slurred as he tried to answer, fingers numb from holding his mother’s barely alive body as he wept silent tears for her. He couldn’t think.

He was a very well disciplined and attentive child but that day's incident had shattered him. He could not pay attention in class and didn't want to talk to anyone. He wanted to be alone. That morning, Arvind's father had mercilessly beat Arvind's mother because she had misplaced some money. Arvind was shocked at the sight of his father beating his mother continuously. Arvind had never seen his father even shout at his mother. But that day,it was a very different view altogether. He could not resist peeping into his parents' room to find out the reason for his mother's loud and muffled screams.
