Structure :- A nephron is the basic unit of structure in the kidney. It is the microscopic structural and functional unit of the kidney. It is composed of a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule.

_____________(✪)_____________

Function :- The primary function of nephron is removing all waste products including the solid wastes, and other excess water from the blood, converting blood into the urine, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion of numerous substances.

The kidneys are the main or primary excretory organs of the body. They are located in the dorsal portion of the body in the abdomen. The kidneys are bean shaped organs with reddish brown colour. Each kidney have millions of coiled tubes alled nephrons, which are the basic structural and functional units of kidney.

Bowman's Capsule :-

The single celled, cup like structure present in the ourer cortex portion of kidney. It consists of network of capillaries called Glomerulus. Glomerulus and Bowman's capsule together known as Renal Corpuscle.

Proximal Convulated Tubule(PCT) :-

This starts from the Bowman's capaule and is largely twisted. This is also present in cortex region.

Henle's Loop:-

The U shaped tubule which is generally found in the medulla region of kidney. This is the junction between PCT and DCT.

  • Asceneding loop of Henle
  • Descending loop of Henle

Distal Convulated Tubule(DCT):-

It starts from descending loop of henle and forms many tubules like structures in cortex of kidney. It then pours it contains in the collecting duct, which carries urine to futher path.

Collecting Duct:-

The collecting tubule recieves the content from DCT of many tubules. This tubules together forms the large collecting ducts. They form the pyramid in the pelvis region of kidney.

The nephrons are the basic functional units of kidneys, so the sum total of all activities in nephrons is the function of kidney. We know that kidney purifies blood and fom urine.

♦️Glomerular Ultrafiltration

The filtration in the capillaries of glomerulus in which the solutes and wastes products are filtrated from blood is known as Glomerular Ultrafiltration.

♦️Tubular Reabsorption

The tubules like PCT and DCT reabsorbs the important substances like salts etc. again ,thus this is known as tubular reabsorption.

♦️Tubular Secretion

The tubules also add certain ions like Hydrogen ion, sodium ions into the urine.

♦️Collection in Collection Duct

The Collecting duct carries all the urine together from all the nephrons and meets in the pelvic region and runs down the ureters into the urinary bladder and then expelled out from urethra.

Thus, The nephrons plays a vital role in the purification of body fluids like blood. The sum of total activities of all nephrons gives rise to the separation of harmful substances like urine etc.
