Explanation:

Let the no of pencil be x and pen be y ,

so we have to find out y

given x+y= 16 eqn1

1.5x +8y=50 eqn2

multiply eqn 1 by 8

and sub eqn 1 from2

1.5x +8y = 50

-8x -8y =-16×8

_____________

-6.5x = - 128+50

______________

x = 75/6.5

x = 11.53

put x= 11.53 in eqn 1

therefore y = 16 -11. 53

y = 4.47 pens

Answer:

Explanation:

Total cost = Rs 50

Pen = Rs 8

Pencil = Rs 1.50

Total pen and pencils bought = 16

.

Assumed he bought all pencils:

Total cost = 16 x 1.5 = Rs 24

.

Find difference in cost:

50 - 24 = 26

.

Find difference in cost of pen and pencil:

8 - 1.5 = Rs 6.5

.

Find number of pens:

26 ÷ 6.5 = 4

.

Find the number of pencils:

16 - 4 = 12

.

Answer: The student bought 12 pencils and 4 pens.
