Students are each given a 20 gram sample of an unknown solid compound in a clear plastic bag. They are instructed to break the material into smaller parts by gently hitting it with a hammer. Some of the parts break into large chunks and some look like a fine powder. Which statement correctly describes these broken pieces of the sample?

Irrespective of the size of the solid broken pieces, the pieces of large chunks and finely powdered pieces would have same number of atoms in it. Because by physical methods atomic level breaking cannot be done. The hammering process will break and change only the physical appearance of the sample chemical properties will remain the same. Hence, the atoms will be same in large chunks and also in fine powder of the sample
