Subsidiary Alliance : Under the system of Subsidiary Alliance, Indiam rulers were not allowed to have their independent, armed forces. They were to be protected by the Company ( East India Company ), but had to pay for the Subsidiary forces that the Company was supposed to maintain for the purpose of their protection. If the Indian ruler failed to make the payment, a part of their territory was taken away as penalty.

Doctrine of Lapse : According to Doctrine of Lapse, if the ruler of any dependent state died, without a legal heir to the throne, then his state would directly be annexed or lapsed into the British Empire. An adopted son was entitled to use the personal property of the ruler, but not his royal status.
