Substance abuse impact on youth and challenges for the future
Answers
By substance abuse it is implied the use of drugs, alcohol or chemical substances by human beings. This results in physical, psychological and emotional harm to the users and others around them.
The youth around the world fall prey to substance abuse mostly by peer group pressure. When young men and women see others using these substances, they are drawn towards trying them out. Initially, they try them once for ‘fun’, but gradually become addicted on repeated use. Consequently, their families are adversely affected and they go on to spread the habit to others.
Use of substances affect the youth of today in retarding their mind and stops or slows down their career progress. Hence, unless they are weaned away from this habit, this malaise could affect an entire generation. Proper counselling in schools and colleges, as a preventive measure, is the need of the hour so that our youth do not go astray by indulging in substance abuse. Parents too should be extra careful and must ensure their children do not indulge in substance abuse.
