The alkanes show substitution reaction as they are saturated having single bonds. So the substances they react with could not get added to any other bond, but replaces the bonds and get substituted. Example when methane reacts with chlorine in presence of diffused sunlight, we can see a substitution reaction.
CH4 + Cl2 ----> CH3Cl + HCl
CH3Cl + Cl2 -----> CH2Cl2 + HCl
CH2Cl2 + Cl2 ------> CHCl3 + HCl
CHCl3 + Cl2 --------> CCl4 + HCl
