Saturated zone is the subsurface zone in which all rock openings are filled with water.  This zone is always found beneath the water table.  Saturated zone can be further classified into two groups - phreatic zone and capillary fringe.  The colour, size and depth of the saturated zone varies with changes in season and periods of moisture.
