Given:

Successive ionization potential of element M are 8.3 , 25.1, 37.9, 259.3, 34.01 eV.

To find:

Formula of the sulphate salt.

Solution:

Ionisation potential is the amount of energy required to remove a single electron from the atomic orbits to infinity.

So, the with removal of 1 electron , the next ionisation potential increases as the average pull of nucleus increases.

But, it can be seen that after release of 3 electrons , the ionisation potential jumps to a very high value (259.3 eV).

This means that the element M is reaching noble gas configuration after removal of 3 electrons.

So , valency of M = 3

So, formula of sulphate salt:

\boxed{\sf{M_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}}}
