Succinic acid has the formula (ch2)n(cooh)2 and reacts with dilute sodium hydroxide as follows: (ch2)n(cooh)2 + 2naoh  (ch2)n(coona)2 + 2h2o 2.0 g of succinic acid were dissolved in water and the solution made up to 250 cm3. this solution was placed in a burette and 18.4 cm3 was required to neutralise 25 cm3 of 0.1 moldm-3 naoh. deduce the molecular formula of the acid and hence the value of n.

(CH2)n(COOH)2 + 2NaOH = (CH2)n(COONa)2 + 2H2O

Mole ratio: Acid : Base = 1:2

(ma x va) / (mb x vb) = 1/2

(ma x 18.4)/(0.1 x 25) = 1/2

ma = (0.1 x 25)/ (2 x 18.4)

      = 0.068 M

2.0 g of succinic acid were dissolved in water and the solution made up to 250 cm³.

⇒ 250cm³ of the solution contain 2g of the acid

Mass in 1 litre = 1000/250 x 2  = 8g

Mass = molarity x molar mass

       8 =
0.068 x molar mass

Molar mass = 8/0.068 = 117.76

(CH2)n(COOH)2 = 117.76

(12 + 2)n + 2(12 + 16x2 + 1) = 117.76

14n + 90 = 117.76

14n = 27.76

n = 2

The value of n = 2

the molecular formula of the acid is (CH2)2(COOH)2
