A compound that conducts electricity in molten or solution state and which concurrently undergoes decomposition with the passage of an electric current through it is an electrolyte.  

Electrolyte :

1) Strong electrolyte - these electrolytes ionize completely to form mobile ions in the solution.  

Examples: - sea water, nitric acid, sodium chloride.  

2)Weak electrolyte: these electrolytes ionized only partially to form free mobile ions.  

Example:- ordinary tap water, oxalic acid, carbonic acid, citric acid.
