Industry is the single largest source of pollution in the United States, as well as the biggest water user. As a private citizen, you may think you can't do much to control the amount of pollution created by industry, but you are wrong. The public can take individual and collective action to reduce industrial pollution in the United States and abroad.
Read labels and reject products that use unsafe or questionable ingredients in them. Residue from dangerous products such as solvents, acids and heavy metals find their way into or environment through storm drains or landfills. If no one bought these products, industry would not manufacture or use them.

Reject companies and products that discourage sustainability and recycling of their products. Many products come with unnecessary packaging, promote a “throwaway” mentality or use plastics that have toxic ingredients. Examples include individually wrapped servings, disposable wipes, Styrofoam containers, aerosol cans and bottled water. Buy from companies that use a minimum of packaging, such as concentrated formula detergents, or reusable versions of products, which reduce the pollution made during material production.
