The sulphur dioxide(so2) gas is oxidized to sulphur trioxide (so3), only when so2 comes in contact with the surface of catalyst known as vanadium pentaoxide (v2o5) , in presence of 2-3 atmospheric pressure 450-500degree Celsius temperature . The required chemical equation is

2SO2 + O2 =2SO3
