Sulfur has been chosen because it links the apparent simplicity of an elemental system to a very complex behavior both in the liquid and the solid phase. Naturally, sulfur normally occurs as yellow orthorhombic crystals; however, a large number of allotropic forms are known (the largest number of all the elements).
