Given,
No. of observations = 12
Sum of observations = x
Arithmetic mean = x/12
=> 256 = x/12
=> 256(12) = x
=> 3072 = x
If 14 is removed from the observations,
No. of observations = 11
Sum of observations = 3072-14
= 3058
Arithmetic mean = 3058/11 = 278

Given:

The Sum of 12 observations is 256.

To find:

The mean of remaining observations if one of the observations 14 is deleted.

Solution:

If one of the observations 14 is deleted, the mean of the remaining observations is 22.

To answer this question, we will follow the following steps:

First of all, we should know that the mean of 'n' observations is equal to the sum of all 'n' observations divided by the total number of observations i.e. n.

This means

Mean = \frac{sum \: of \: n \: observations}{n}

Now, as given, we have,

Sum of 12 observations = 256

If one observation which is 14 is deleted,

then

Sum of observations

 = 256 - 14

 = 242

Also,

Number of observations

 = 11

Thus,

Mean of remaining observations

 =  \frac{242}{11}

 = 22

Hence, the mean of the remaining observations is 22.
