Let the son's age be x.

Father's age=3x.

According to the Problem,

3x+x=40

4x=40

=x=40/4

=10.

Their ages are 10,3*10

=10,30.

Hope it helps.

Define x:

Let the son be x years old

Father = 3x

Solve x:

x + 3x = 40

4x = 40

x = 10

Find their age:

Son = x = 10 years old

Father = 3x = 3(10) = 30 years old

Answer: The son is 10 years old and the Father is 30 years old
