let the ages of Manish and Savita be x and y respectively.
according to given condition,
x + y= 31.
x=31-y.. ...(i)
and, x-3= 4(y-3)
=> x-3=4y-12
=>x-4y+12-3=0
=>x-4y+9=0. .....(ii)

Put (I) equation in (ii),
31-y-4y+9=0
31-5y+9=0
40-5y=0
-5y=-40
therefore y = 8

Put y=8 in (i),
x=31-8
Therefore x= 23
therefore ages of Manish and Savita are 23 and 8 respectively.
