let the two numbers be x and y
in which x is smaller

a/q from 1st part-
x+y=42 ------(I)

a/q from 2nd part-
4x=3y
4x-3y=0 -----(ii)

multiplying eq I by 3 and adding eq I and ii
3x+3y=126
4x-3y=0

7x=126
x= 126/7
x=18

putting x=18 in eq I
18+y=42
y=42-18
y=24

so, x=18
y=24
