According to the question,

Let the required fractions are x and y,

Given, sum of the required fractions = 8 / 9

∴ x + y = 8 / 9        ...( i )

Also given, difference of the required fractions = 2 / 9

∴ x - y = 2 / 9      ...( ii )

Now, adding ( i ) and ( ii ),

x + y = 8 / 9

x - y = 2 / 9_

2x    = 10 / 9

⇒ x = 10 / 18

⇒ x = 5 / 9

Substituting the value of x in ( i ),

⇒ x + y = 8 / 9

⇒ 5 / 9 + y = 8 / 9

⇒ y = 8 / 9 - 5 / 9

⇒ y = ( 8 - 5 ) / 9

⇒ y = 3 / 9

Therefore, required fractions are 5 / 9 and 3 / 9 .
