SOLUTION

CORRECT QUESTION

Sum of two numbers is 14. If one number exceeds other by 4 . The numbers are

a) 9, 5

b) 3, 6

c) 2, 1

d) 10, 8

EVALUATION

Let the required numbers are a and b ( b > a )

Since one number exceeds other by 4

b = a + 4 - - - - - - - (1)

Again Sum of two numbers is 14

a + b = 14 - - - - - - - - (2)

From Equation 1 and Equation 2 we get

a + a + 4 = 14

⇒ 2a + 4 = 14

⇒ 2a = 10

⇒ a = 5

We get from Equation 1

b = 5 + 4 = 9

So the required numbers are 5 and 9

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the correct option is a) 9, 5
