There are 2 electrons,8 elections and 8 electrons in first, second, and third shell respectively. So for 1st 18 elements, there elections are started filling from first shell. For example- carbon- it has 6 electrons so 2 electrons will fit in first shell and 4 in second. Similarly calcium has 20 electrons so 2 electrons in first shell,8 electrons in second ,8 in third and finally 2 left which will fit in 4th
